BRISTOL, R.I. — In a matchup between the University of Hartford and Roger Williams University softball teams, Hartford emerged victorious earning a 10-2 victory in game one, and 12-3 in game two on Friday afternoon at Paolino Field.
Carly Mayhood delivered the win in the circle for Hartford, allowing only two runs over six innings while striking out five batters. Raegen Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) took the loss for Roger Williams, surrendering four runs over four innings.
Azya Walker led Hartford's offensive charge with two RBIs, while Sydney Matz and Taylor Fitch contributed two runs each. Kasey Ruo (Smithfield, R.I.) added an RBI for the Hawks in the contest, with Taylor Howell (Sandwich, Mass.) adding a pair of hits.
The game started off as a defensive battle, with both teams holding strong through the first two innings. However, Hartford broke the deadlock in the third inning, capitalizing on wild pitches to score two runs, taking a 2-0 lead.
Hartford's offense gained momentum in the fifth inning, with Walker drove in a run with a single, followed by aggressive baserunning that extended Hartford's lead to four.
The seventh inning saw Hartford explode with offensive firepower, scoring six runs to further solidify their lead. Matz hit a single and Fitch put a double into right field, driving in the final runs for Hartford.
Roger Williams scored a pair of runs with a sacrifice bunt, and ensuing throwing error, tallying two runs on the play.
In game two, Gracie Hopkins earned the win allowing only three runs over four innings while striking out two batters. Skye Merrow (Hudson, N.H.) took the loss for Roger Williams.
Adelie Beebe led Hartford's offensive charge with three RBIs, including a home run, while Matz and Gia Miccio also made significant contributions with two RBIs each. Roger Williams brought in three runs, two off the bat of Shannon Starratt (Lake George, N.Y.) and one off a single by Nicolette Fraser (Swampscott, Mass.).
Hartford wasted no time jumping out to an early lead in the first inning with a two-run homer by Mara Sczecienski. However, Roger Williams quickly responded with a solo home run by Starratt, cutting Hartford's lead to 2-1.
Hartford continued to build on their lead, adding runs in the second and third innings, with a homer by Beebe and a two-run single by Miccio. By the end of the third inning, Hartford held an 8-2 lead, with Fraser hitting a single through the left side in the bottom half of the inning.
Hartford's offense continued to score runs, with three more coming in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 11-2. Starratt then came up in the bottom half of the inning with Casey Uryga (Berlin, Conn.) on second and hit a double to left center for the RBI. Hartford added another run in the top of the fifth, holding the Hawks scoreless in the bottom half to close out the contest.
Roger Williams (9-9, 0-2 CCC) will travel to Biddeford on Sunday, Apr. 7 for a doubleheader at the University of New England. The Hawks will then host Eastern Nazarene on Wednesday, Apr. 10 on Paolino Field.
