Baseball: Hawks Open Season with Dominant Win Over St. Scholastica

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Roger Williams University baseball team opened up their season on Friday afternoon at Northeast Regional Park, defeating St. Scholastica, 10-0, in Florida.

Rory Lynch (Easton, Conn.) went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs including a home run.  London Camelo (Bristol, R.I.) also recorded a pair of hits, with Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.) going 2-for-3 in the four spot with an RBI and a walk. Nick Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) also went 2-for-4 on the day with a hit and a run, along with two RBIs.

Louie Mosca (Old Tappan, N.J.) took the mound pitching the full game with seven innings with three hits and three walks on 94 pitches with 11 strikeouts.

After St. Scholastica failed to score in the top of the first, the Hawks responded by putting their first two runners of the season on base. After a wild pitch put the runners on second and third, Morin put the ball in place to force a fielder's choice by the shortstop who got the runner at second but was unable to get Aidan Hawley (Natick, Mass.) who scored to put the Hawks up 1-0.

The Hawks also added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning with Lynch sending the ball off the fence in left field to bring in Camelo and Hawley, taking a 3-0 lead.

Lynch also hit a two-run home run over the left field wall in the fifth inning, giving the Hawks a 5-0 lead.  In the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded, St. Scholastica's pitcher balked, bringing in Camelo from third. With the bases loaded after Dennis Folan (Medfield, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, the Hawks saw Sheehan hit a ball down the left field line, bringing in two.

The Hawks allowed the bases to load again before Hawley hit a single to center field, Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) then drew a walk to seal the game.

Roger Williams (1-0, 0-0 CCC) will face off against Penn State – Altoona in a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 9 with the first game set for 9:45 am.
