Softball: Hawks Split Opening Day Against Geneva and Husson

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Roger Williams University softball team began their 2024 campaign, splitting their opening day with a 2-1 win over Geneva before dropping in extra innings 5-4 to Husson.

Against Geneva, the Hawks struck first with Cece Baptista (Central Falls, R.I.) scoring on a wild pitch. The Golden Tornados evened the score in the top of the third when Lexi Zanic scored off of Elishea Reed's single to left center. Roger stuck back in the sixth when Lucy Maurao (Holliston, Mass.) scored from second off of Jamie Wells (Castle Rock, Colo.) single to center field to give the Hawks the 2-1 lead.

Against Husson, the Hawks struck first in the top of the third after a two run RBI from Hailey Williams (Vernon, Conn.). Shannon Strarratt (Lake George, N.Y.) followed up with a single to center which allowed Williams to score to give the Hawks the 3-0 early lead. The fourth saw Husson cut the lead down to two.

Williams second RBI of the game put the Hawks back up by three in the top of the seventh. Husson battled back in the bottom of the seventh to score three runs to force the game into extra innings.

Husson continued their scoring by into the eighth with a successful squeeze to give the Eagles the go ahead with a 5-4 victory.  

Roger Williams (1-1, 0-0 CCC) will play Simmons on Saturday, Mar. 8 at 9:30 am before facing North Central at 12 pm.  The Hawks will then play on Tuesday, Mar. 12 at 10 am against Hood College.
