Bristol, R.I. - The Roger Williams University baseball team beat Rhode Island College, 8-6, on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. The game was played on Paolino Field.
Matthew Donovan (Stoneham, Mass.) started the game on the mound for the Hawks, pitching 2.2 innings with four earned runs, with eight hits and three strikeouts. Nolan Niziol (Sparta, N.J.) pitched three innings in relief, giving up no runs and striking out two. Ryan Camp (Cheshire, Conn.) and BrettLauterbach (Farfield, Conn.) also had scoreless outings in relief.
The Roger Williams offense was led by Owen Hibbard(Roxbury, Conn.), who went 2-2 with two walks, two runs, and one RBI. Ty Cali (Taunton, Mass.) recorded two RBIs in the game and stole a base. Aidan Hawley (Natick, Mass.) went 1-2 with a double and drew three walks.
Both teams came out hot to start the game. The Anchormen put up three runs in the top of the first, thanks to two home runs. Roger Williams responded with a rally of their own in the bottom of the inning. London Camelo (Bristol, R.I.) hit into a fielder's choice, which brought two runs home due to an error. Hibbard followed that with a single to left field, allowing another run to score. Dennis Folan (Medfield, Mass.) gave the Hawks a lead later in the inning with a sacrifice fly to left field.
After Rhode Island took the lead back in the third inning, Roger Williams put up a big sixth inning. Ethan Keeney (Harwich, Mass.) hit an infield single, tying the game at 5. Cali broke the tie later in the inning, with a two-run single to left field.
The Hawks would add one more run to their lead in the seventh on a Nick Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) single to third base. The Anchormen would attempt a ninth inning comeback, but only scored one run to make the score 8-6.
Roger Williams (17-3, 6-0 CCC) will host #1 Endicott in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader this Saturday, Apr. 13 at 12:00 pm. They will then travel to Wentworth on Tuesday, Apr. 16 at 6:00 pm.
