SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University softball team dropped both games of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Western New England, falling in game one 4-3, and game two 4-7.
In game one, Kayleigh O'Connor had 1 hit with two runs scored in the contest, while Hailey Williams had one hit and a pair of RBIs. Shannon Starratt one hit and one run in the contest. Reagan Germano pitched 4 innings in the contest while only allowing two runs.
The game kicked off with three scoreless innings building up to the fourth where both team scored a run. Taylor Howell brought in the first run of the game in the fourth inning, doubling to right field with Starratt coming in to score on the play. The Golden Bears responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning with a single to left field.
In the fifth the Hawks put a single to center field in the top half of the inning to bring in O'Connor, with Western New England again responding with a run in the bottom of the inning. The two teams were scoreless through the seventh inning, forcing extra innings.
Williams brought O'Connor across for the second time in the game, with a ground out in the top half of the eighth, before WNE took the win with a pair of runs coming across to score in the bottom of the inning.
In the second game of the day the Hawks came up short again in a close contest 7-4. Starratt scored a total of two runs. Howell had two runs scored with a total of two RBIs and Josley Sosa came across to score once..
The game started with both teams exchanging blows in the first inning. Roger Williams again scored first, bringing in two runs with Howell hitting a ball over the center field wall. However, the WNE quickly responded with a run to shrink the lead to one.
WNE leveled the score in the bottom of the second, before Starratt hit a homer to center in the third, following by Sosa scoring off an O'Connor single to center field.
WNE bounced back in the third inning, capitalizing to score four runs in the inning, with key hits from Taylor Keegan, Kailey Carrano and Jill McDonald, seizing an 6-4 lead. The Golden Bears added another run in the sixth, closing out the win.
Roger Williams (10-12, 1-5 CCC) will host Wentworth on Sunday, Apr. 14 at 12:00 pm for a doubleheader. The Hawks will then relieve a visit from Mitchell College for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, Apr. 16 at 3:00 pm.
