Baseball: Hawks Suffer Conference Loss at Wentworth

Bristol, R.I. – The Roger Williams University baseball team lost against Wentworth, 6-4, on Tuesday evening to split the season series in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup. The game was played at Wentworth on Libby Field.

Danny Powers (Mansfield, Mass.) started the game on the mound for the Hawks. In 2.2 innings, he gave up three runs on three hits and four walks. The other three Wentworth runs came off Ben Emero (Medway, Mass.), who in 0.2 innings gave up four hits and zero walks. James Nichols (Bridgewater, Mass.) also pitched in relief for the Hawks, throwing 2.2 innings with two hits and zero runs allowed.

Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.) led the Hawks offense in this matchup. Morin went 3-5 at the plates, with two RBIs. Ethan Keeney (Harwich, Mass.) and Owen Hibbard (Roxbury, Conn.) both also had multi-hit games for Roger Williams. Ty Cali (Taunton, Mass.) went 1-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Wentworth started the game strong on offense, scoring three runs in the first inning. Roger Williams responded in the third inning, with Cali hitting a double in the left-center gap to bring one run home. The Hawks would add a second run later in the inning on a single to center field by Morin.

After a delay for the sunset, Wentworth would add two runs to their lead in the fifth inning. Roger Williams responded in the seventh inning, scoring another run on a single by Morin. The Hawks would cut the lead to two runs in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Cali. The Hawks were able to get the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but were unable to rally any further.

Roger Williams (18-5, 7-2 CCC) will head to Johnson and Wales on Wednesday, Apr. 17 at 4:00 pm for a non-conference matchup. They'll return home on Thursday, Apr. 18 to play against WPI at 3:00 pm.
