PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University baseball team lost against Johnson & Wales, 9-3, on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup, at Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
Nolan Niziol (Sparta, N.J.) started on the mound for the Hawks, pitching three innings and giving up four runs on five hits and two walks. Following him, Matt Seminara (Succasunna, N.J.) came in and threw 2.1 scoreless innings for the Hawks. Kevin Blum (New City, N.Y.) also came in for relief, giving up four runs in 1.1 innings on one hit and three walks.
Owen Hibbard (Roxbury, Conn.) led Roger Williams on offense, going 2-4 with a double, two RBIs, and a walk. London Camelo (Bristol, R.I.) and Dennis Folan (Medfield, Mass.) also had multi-hit games for the Hawks.
Johnson & Wales started strong on offense. In the first inning the Wildcats scored two runs, coming on a solo home run and a sacrifice fly. The Wildcats added two more runs in the third inning to give them a 4-0 lead.
The Hawks' first run came in the sixth inning. With two outs and a runner on second, Folan hit a single to right field and cut the lead to three. Roger Williams cut the lead to one an inning later, scoring two runs on a double to right center by Hibbard. However, the Wildcats responded later that inning with a five-run rally to extend their lead to six runs.
Roger Williams (18-6, 7-2 CCC) will return home on Thursday, Apr. 18 to play against WPI at 3:00 pm. They'll then host Hartford at home for a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 20 starting a 12:00 pm.
