Men's Baseball: Hawks Rally Late to Force Tie Against WPI

Bristol, R.I. – The Roger Williams University baseball team tied their game against WPI on Thursday afternoon. The game was heading to extra innings with the score tied 9-9 but was called off due to inclement weather. The game was played on Paolino Field.

Conor Quinlan (Taunton, Mass.) started the game on the mound for the Hawks. In 1.2 innings, he allowed three runs on five hits with no walks. Nick Gleason (Northboro, Mass.) came in and pitched 3.2 innings to relieve Quinlan. Gleason gave up five runs on seven hits, while also not walking a batter. The Roger Williams bullpen allowed only one run the rest of the game, with Ryan Camp (Cheshire, Conn.), Matt Hynes (Farmingdale, N.Y.), and MarkAnthony Glickman (Newbury, Mass.) recording scoreless outings.

The Hawks had many different contributors on offense. Ty Cali (Taunton, Mass.) went 3-4 with two runs scored, and recorded the game-tying RBI. Owen Hibbard (Roxbury, Conn.) and Nick Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) each recorded one hit and two RBIs. Dennis Folan (Medfield, Mass.) and Aidan Hawley (Natick, Mass.) both had multi-hit games.

The Engineers started the game off strong. A two-run home run in the first inning gave WPI an early lead. They added a run in each of the next three innings, giving them a 5-0 lead going into the fifth inning. The Hawks chipped into the lead in the fifth inning. Roger Williams scored two runs off a hit by pitch with the bases loaded and a passed ball. Sheehan added two more runs for the Hawks with a double to left field, making it a 5-4 deficit.

WPI put up three runs in the sixth inning, extending their lead once again. Roger Williams answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring runs on hits by Hibbard and Hawley. Another run came in on a wild pitch, and the Hawks had made it a one run game again.

Each team scored one run in the eighth inning. For the Hawks, this run came off the bat of Sam Weigel (Brookfield, Conn.) on a sacrifice fly to left field. The Hawks evened the score in the ninth inning. In the pouring rain with one out and a man on third, Cali hit a flyball to right field just deep enough to bring the runner home to score. The game was called before going to extra innings due to field conditions and continuous rain.

Roger Williams (18-6-1, 7-2 CCC) will host Hartford at home for a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 20 starting at 12:00 pm.
