Baseball: Hawks Struggle In Doubleheader Losses Against Nichols

Bristol, R.I. – The Roger Williams University baseball team were swept in their doubleheader against Nichols on Saturday. The Hawks lost the first game 7-6, and the second game 8-5. Both games were played at Paolino Field.

Louie Mosca (Old Tappan, N.J.) got the start on the mound for the Hawks in game one. In 3.2 innings, Mosca allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks. J.T. Gunzy (Danbury, Conn.) came in for relief to pitch 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out six batters. MarkAnthony Glickman (Newbury, Mass.) came in for the ninth and didn't allow a hit or a run.

On offense, Aidan Hawley (Natick, Mass.) and Owen Hibbard (Roxbury, Conn.) led Roger Williams in game one. Both Hawley and Hibbard went 3-5 at the plate, with Hawley also having two RBIs and two runs scored. London Camelo (Bristol, R.I.) also had a multi-hit game and an RBI. 

Nichols started the game strong in the first inning. The Bison hit three straight singles with two outs to gain an early 4-0 lead. Roger Williams responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, coming on a fielder's choice hit by Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.). Nichols added another run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly, making the score 5-1.

In the third inning, Roger Williams began their rally. They added two runs in the inning, coming on a sacrifice fly by Morin and an RBI single by Camelo. The Hawks added three more in the fourth inning. A double by Hawley scored two runs to even the score at 5, and an RBI single by Hibbard gave the Hawks the lead.

The Hawks stayed ahead of the Bison until the eighth inning. With two outs, Nichols hit a two-run home run to take a one-run lead. Roger Williams was unable to score in the eighth or ninth innings, resulting in a loss in game one.

In game two, Lucas Lariviere (Cumberland, R.I.) started for Roger Williams. In five innings, Lariviere allowed four runs on five hits and five walks. James Nichols (Bridgewater, Mass.) came in to relieve Lariviere but allowed three runs, one of which was earned, on two hits. Matt Hynes (Farmingdale, N.Y.), Brandon Csizmadia (Trumbull, Conn.) and Brett Lauterbach (Fairfield, Conn.) all had scoreless relief appearances for the Hawks. 

The Hawks' offense in game two was led by Ethan Keeney (Harwich, Mass.), who went 3-4 with an RBI. Morin and Camelo also had multi-hit games in the second game of the afternoon. Sam Weigel (Brookfield, Conn.) went 1-5 with three RBIs. 

Nichols started game two strong, recording two runs in the first inning. Roger Williams answered with one of their own in the bottom of the inning, on an RBI fielder's choice by Weigel. 

Following the first inning, the Hawks went scoreless up until the seventh inning. In the time between, the Bison added six unanswered runs to give them an 8-1 lead. In the seventh inning, Roger Williams added four runs on RBI singles by Camelo, Weigel, and Keeney. That ended the scoring in game two, giving Nichols the 8-5 win. 

Roger Williams (22-8-1, 8-4 CCC) will travel on Sunday, Apr. 28 to Norton, Mass. to take on Wheaton at 1:00 pm.
