Baseball: Hawks' Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short In Loss at Wheaton

Bristol, R.I. – The Roger Williams University baseball team's late inning rally was not enough, losing to Wheaton 8-5 on Sunday afternoon. The game was played in James V. Sidell Stadium.

Nick Gleason (Northboro, Mass.) started the game on the mound for Roger Williams. In 5.1 innings, Gleason gave up six runs on nine hits and two walks. Conor Quinlan (Taunton, Mass.) came in for relief, pitching 2.2 innings to close the game while giving up two runs on four hits and no walks.

Aidan Hawley (Natick, Mass.) and Ty Cali (Taunton, Mass.) were the main contributors to the Hawks' offense, both having muti-hit games. Hawley also had two RBIs. Owen Hibbard (Roxbury, Conn.), London Camelo (Bristol, R.I.), and Chris Faraca (Peabody, Mass.) each recorded one RBI as well.

Roger Williams was the first on the board in the game. In the first inning, Camelo doubled to left field to bring in a run and give the Hawks an early lead. Wheaton responded in the bottom of the first, scoring one run to tie the game.

The Lyons would add two runs in the third and one run in the fourth, breaking open a 4-1 lead. Roger Williams would add another run in the sixth inning, coming on a solo home run by Faraca. Wheaton answered with four runs between the sixth and eighth innings, extending their lead to 8-2.

Down six in the bottom of the ninth, the Hawks would begin to rally. A double to right-center by Hawley would score two runs, cutting the Lyons' lead to four. The Hawks would add another run on an RBI single by Hibbard. However, the Hawks would be unable to complete the rally, losing 8-5.

Roger Williams (22-9-1, 8-4 CCC) will play next on Tuesday, Apr. 30 when they travel to Salve Regina for a game at 3:30 pm.
