Softball: Hawks Split at University of New England in Sunday Doubleheader

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Roger Williams University softball team split on Sunday afternoon at the University of New England, winning game one 6-0, and falling in game two, 8-7, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.

In game one, Taylor Howell had three hits with three RBIs in the contest, while Wells added three with two RBIs. Raegen Germano pitched a complete game shut out allowing only two hits and four walks with 10 strikeouts.

The game kicked off with a strong first inning for Roger Williams, with Howell doubling down the left field line to bring in two runs, followed by Jamie Wells singling to right center, adding another run to the board, giving Roger Williams an early 3-0 lead.

The Hawks added another run in the second inning courtesy of Howell's single to left field, extending their lead to 4-0.

Roger Williams further solidified their lead in the sixth inning, with Shannon Starratt reaching first on a fielding error, bringing in another run, followed by Wells' single to left field, adding another run to the tally, making it 6-0 in favor of the Hawks.

In the second game of the day, Kelsey Burr went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Howell and Maeve Brannigan each had two RBIs while Natalie Lundari picked up the loss in the contest.

The game started with both teams exchanging blows in the first inning. Roger Williams drew first blood as Caroline Thomas singled to left field, bringing in Cece Baptista for an early lead. However, the Nor'easters quickly responded with Grace Tutt's RBI fielder's choice and Dana Whitten's double to center field, putting them ahead 3-1.

Roger Williams mounted a strong comeback in the third inning, highlighted by Howell's RBI single and Wells' RBI single, followed by Brannigan's two-RBI double, giving them a 6-3 lead.

However, UNE bounced back in the fourth inning, capitalizing to score five runs in the inning, with key hits from Hannah Irons, Emma Michaud, and Whitten, seizing an 8-7 lead that they maintained until the final out.

Roger Williams (10-10, 1-3 CCC) will host Eastern Nazarene on Wednesday, Apr. 10 at 3:00 pm for a doubleheader. The Hawks will then visit Western New England as they return to CCC action.
