Softball: Hawks Advance to Play Western New England, Eliminate Wentworth

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Roger Williams University softball team defeated No. 4 Wentworth on Saturday afternoon, advancing to the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship, 4-0.
 
Kiera Quadros (East Providence, R.I.) had another stellar performance in the circle, going 7.0 innings, throwing 88 pitches, with four hits and a pair of strikeouts, moving to 7-1 on the season. Julie Schriver picked up the loss for Wentworth going 0.2 inning giving up four runs on three hits. Jess Rowe pitched in relief going 5.1 innings with two hits.
 
At the plate, Christina Denovellis (Rocky Hill, Conn.) hit a home run, bringing in three runs. Shannon Starratt (Lake George, N.Y.) also had an RBI with one hit in the outing, while Hailey Williams had two hits, coming around to score. For Wentworth, Kelsey Medalia had a pair of hits, with Annabelle Hebard and Katie Kranz each added one.
 
The Hawks opened scoring on the day with a Starratt hitting a single down the left field line, with runners on first and second, bringing in Williams to score from second base, following her lead off single. Two batters later with Starratt and Kayleigh O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) on base, Denovellis hit a ball over the left field fence to take a 4-0 lead.
 
In the top of the fourth inning, the Leopards were able to load the bases, with Medalia, Hebard, and Kranz each reaching on consecutive hits. With the bases loaded Quadros was able to get Miccile and Miller, consecutively to end the inning.
 
Both teams were held to one runner over the final three plate appearances as Kasey Ruo (Smithfield, R.I.) made a diving catch to end the game in right field.
 
Roger Williams (22-16, 7-9 CCC) will face No. 2 Western New England at 3:00 pm on Saturday, May 11, if they stave off elimination, the Hawks will then play on Sunday, May 12 in an if necessary CCC Championship Game.
