Softball: Roger Williams Forces If Necessary Game for CCC Title

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Roger Williams University softball team outlasted, No. 2 Western New England, 1-0, in Game 11 of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament action. The Hawks will be looking to win their first CCC Championship since the 2013 season.
 
The Hawks led the way with five hits in the contest to the Golden Bears one, while stranding five runners on base, with Western New England leaving four on base. Raegen Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) allowed one hit with nine strikeouts in the contest, walking three. Riley Kane picked up the loss, coming in to pitch 1.2 innings allowing one run, with two strikeouts.
 
At the dish, Taylor Howell (Sandwich, Mass.) went 2-for-2 at the plate, with a walk. Hailey Williams (Vernon, Conn.), Jamie Wells (Castle Rock, Colo.), and Ava Mendence (East Providence, R.I.) each picked up a hit in the matchup, with Mendence recording the lone RBI. Madison Mason recorded the lone hit for Western New England.
 
After both teams went one-two-three in the first inning, the Hawks then picked up the first runner of the game, when Nicolette Fraser (Swampscott, Mass.) reached after an error at third base.
 
Both teams were scoreless until the seventh inning, when the Hawks opened up the inning with Howell doubling to right center field. After Kane struck out the next batter, Wells then walked, before a wild pitch on ball four allowed Howell to reach third. Mendence then hit a single up the middle, bringing in Howell from third.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Mason doubled down the left field line for the Golden Bears, breaking up Germano's no hitter. Alex Ferriouolo moved Angie Carrasquillo to third after coming in to pinch run for Mason. Kane struck out swinging before rounding out the game with Marley Rodriguez fouling out to end the game.
 
Roger Williams (23-16, 9-7 CCC) will face Western New England in a winner take all CCC Tournament game on Sunday, May 12 at 1:00 pm.
