Baseball: Hawks End Regular Season with Doubleheader Split

Bristol, R.I. – The Roger Williams University baseball team finished their regular season by splitting a doubleheader against Western New England. The Hawks won the first game 7-1 and dropped the second game 12-4. The games were played at Trelease Park.

In game one, Louie Mosca (Old Tappan, N.J.) started on the mound for the Hawks. In four innings, Mosca had six strikeouts while allowing one run on four hits. J.T. Gunzy (Danbury, Conn.) came in for relief, pitching five scoreless innings to close out the game while accumulating five strikeouts.

On offense, Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.) led the Hawks with three hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Owen Hibbard (Roxbury, Conn.) had two hits, two RBIs, and one run scored. Chris Faraca (Peabody, Mass.), Ty Cali (Taunton, Mass.), and Dennis Folan (Medfield, Mass.) also had multi-hit performances in game one.

Western New England scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning. The Hawks didn't score in the game until the seventh inning, but piled the runs on when they did. Roger Williams scored their first run on a bases-loaded walk by Aidan Hawley (Natick, Mass.), evening the score at one. The Hawks took the lead later that inning when London Camelo (Bristol, R.I.) brought a run home on a groundout. Two more runs came home on a triple by Morin. A double by Hibbard and single by Cali each scored a run, giving the Hawks a 6-1 lead heading into the eighth. The Hawks added one more run in the ninth on a single by Hibbard, closing out the 7-1 win.

In game two, Lucas Lariviere (Cumberland, Mass.) was named the starting pitcher. In four innings, Lariviere struck out five batters. He also gave up three runs on four hits and two walks. Following him, Conor Quinlan (Taunton, Mass.) and James Nichols (Bridgewater, Mass.) both pitched scoreless innings for the Hawks. The relievers following Nichols had trouble managing the Golden Bears, with Ryan Camp (Cheshire, Conn.), Brett Lauterbach (Fairfield, Conn.), Matt Hynes (Farmingdale, N.Y.), and Danny Powers (Mansfield, Mass.) each giving up multiple runs in their appearances.

Ethan Keeney (Harwich, Mass.) was the main contributor to the Hawks offense in game two. Keeney went 2-4 at the plate and had two RBIs. Hibbard and Hawley also had multi-hit games, while Morin and Faraca each had one RBI.

Western New England once again scored the first runs of the game. In the second inning, the Golden Bears put three runs on the board. RWU responded in the fourth inning, with two runs coming home to score on a single up the middle by Keeney. The Hawks took the lead in the fifth inning, scoring one run on singles by both Morin and Faraca.

The Golden Bears shut down Roger Williams for the rest of the game and scored nine unanswered runs between the seventh and eighth innings to pick up the win.

Roger Williams (23-11-1, 9-5 CCC) will await their matchup in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament this coming week.
