BEVERLY, Mass. – The Roger Williams University softball team fell to No. 4 Wentworth on Tuesday afternoon at the Endicott Softball Complex, 4-3, in the first game of the Hawks' Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Playoffs.
Christina Denovellis (Rocky Hill, Conn.) had a pair of hits with three RBIs , while
Taylor Howell (Sandwich, Mass.) and
Kayleigh O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) each had a hit with an RBI in the matchup.
Caroline Thomas (Cranston, R.I.) had an RBI in the matchup. In the circle
Raegen Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) pitched 4.1 innings giving up seven hits, with three earned runs and four strikeouts.
For Wentworth, Kaitlin Pettenger went 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBIs on the day, while Kyla Igawa and Annabelle Hebard each added a pair of hits. Jess Rowe pitched a complete game in the circle, going 7.0 innings with five hits and a pair of earned runs.
The Hawks opened the game up with
Shannon Starratt (Lake George, N.Y.) reaching safely on a walk, before Howell hit a ball out to left center for a double, that Starratt was able to score on. In the bottom half of the inning, the Leopards were able to level the score when Pettenger hit a homer over the left field wall to tie the contest. With the bases loaded following the home run, Sydney Miccile hit an infield fly and allowed Igawa to come across to score, with Wentworth taking a 2-1 lead.
Thomas hit a ball over to second, but
Cece Baptista (Central Falls, R.I.) was able to beat the play at the plate to score, leveling the contest at 2-2. Pettenger then hit another home run to center field giving the Leopards a 3-2 advantage before a Hebard single brought in Igawa shortly after to take a 4-2 lead into the sixth.
The Hawks scored one run in the top of the sixth with a groundout by O'Connor to short, allowing Denovellis to come home. The Leopard held the Hawks scoreless in the seventh inning to close out the contest.
No. 5 Roger Williams (19-16, 9-7 CCC) will play No. 6 Suffolk on Friday, May 10 at 10:00 am at the Endicott Softball Complex in an CCC Tournament elimination game.
