WORCESTER, Mass. – The Roger Williams University field hockey team was able to outlast the Engineers of WPI in a defensive battle, 1-0, on Friday evening at H. Carr Field in a non-conference match up.
The Hawks only took four shots, putting three on target in the win, while WPI had 10 shots, with four landing within the frame of the cage. The Engineers had 17 penalty corner opportunities with the Hawks only earning six in the matchup. WPI also had the lone card on the match.
For the Hawks,
Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.) had the lone goal of the match, while
Sara Carney (Franklin, Mass.) and
Elizabeth Duquette (Pittsford, N.Y.) each had a shot on target.
Jill Haudenshield (Sykesville, Md.) had three saves on the day with
Abigail Stevens (Brewster, Mass.) recording a defensive save.
For WPI, Eve Martineau and Lauren Coutu had a shot on goal each, with Eliza Dutson putting two on cage. Ella Moreau had a pair of saves, while allowing only one goal in cage.
WPI had four shots in the opening frame, while holding the Hawks without an opportunity. The Hawks had a pair of shots in the second quarter, the first coming from Duquette, with Carney following shortly after.
In the third quarter, Roger Williams finally broke through, with King scoring the first of the season in the 35th minute. A penalty corner allowed King to put her own rebound opportunity into the back of the net, picking up the rebound off the left side.
The Hawks were able to hold on, not recording a shot in the fourth quarter, with WPI controlling play. The Engineers put a pair of shots on goal, including a shot with two seconds remaining, that Haudenshield stopped to seal the victory.
Roger Williams (1-0, 0-0 CNE) will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1:00 pm when they take on Johnson & Wales in Providence. The Hawks will then host Babson on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 pm, before hosting Saturday, Sept. 7 at 12:00 pm.
