Field Hockey: Hawks Move to 2-0 with Win Against Johnson and Wales

BRISTOL, R.I - The Roger Williams Field Hockey team improved to 2-0 following their road tilt against Johnson and Wales University (JWU).

The action began around the seven-minute mark in this one, when Caroline Freeman (Falmouth, Mass.) netted the first of five Hawk goals, on a feed from Sara Carney (Franklin, Mass.). The Hawks would continue to apply pressure, as just 40 seconds later, Maddy Monahan (Bristol, N.H.) dropped in another for Roger Williams. The shots continued to fly at JWU goalkeeper Sophia Brea throughout the remainder of the first quarter, as the Hawks tallied a whopping 12 shots in the first quarter alone. This proved to be too many, as Abigail Stevens (Brewster, Mass.) further expanded the lead for the women, on a feed from Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.). In the second quarter, JWU tried to answer, as they fired off four shots to the Hawks two, however none of which were able to find the back of the net, leading to a scoreless quarter for both sides.

Monahan wasn't finished just yet, as she netted her second goal of the game to begin the second half, and improve the Hawks lead to 4-0. Carney and King continued to stay involved, as they both assisted on the goal. JWU quickly responded with a goal of their own, when Zofia Bangs dropped one in on a feed from Elaina Fseisi, breaking the shutout. At the 41st minute mark, JWU scored their second goal when Elaina Fseisi found Rayne Millett for her first goal of the season, giving the Wildcats some late life.

The Hawks and Wildcats each exchanged goals in the fourth quarter. Zofia Bangs netted her second goal of the game to make it 4-3 and give the Hawks a scare, but it was Lauren Costanzo (North Andover, Mass.) who put the game out of reach making it 5-3 with just seven minutes of play remaining. Hannah Brazil (East Sandwich, Mass.) was stellar in net, as she faced 24 shots from the Wildcats, allowing just three goals. The Hawks went on to hold off the Wildcats and capture the 5-3 victory for their second win in as many games. JWU falls to 1-1 following the matchup.

Roger Williams (2-0) will face off against Babson College in their next matchup, which will take place Thursday, Sep. 5th at 7:00 PM on Bayside Field. As for Johnson and Wales University (1-1), they will head to Salve Regina next Wednesday, Sep. 4th for a 6:30 PM tilt.
