BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University field hockey team fell to #3 Babson on Thursday evening on Bayside Field, 1-0, in a non-conference contest.
The Hawks were outshot 19-2, with Babson putting seven of their attempts on target. The Beavers had 14 penalty corners, while Roger Williams was held scoreless.
The teams played to a draw in the opening quarter, with the Hawks taking a pair of shots in the opening frame, one from
Hannah Timbrouck (Kingston, N.Y.) and
Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.). Babson saw Alex Michelotti take a lone shot in the frame.
The second stanza saw Babson dominate, earning eight penalty corners over the quarter. A little over six minutes into the quarter, Camille Marsh put a shot on target, that
Jill Haudenshield (Sykesville, Md.) was able to make a diving stop on. Berit Sharrow also put a shot on cage, with Haudenshield again making the save.
At the half, the score was knotted at 0-0, with Babson holding a 9-2 advantage on shots, with two shots on goal and eight corners, with the Hawks unable to earn an opportunity.
Early in the second half, Marsh fired a shot from just inside the scoring area, that went high and off the crossbar over Haudenshield. Shortly after Michelotti put a ball in wide from the left of the goalkeeper, that crossed just wide of the net for the second scoring opportunity of the half.
The Beavers again had a scoring opportunity when Lauren Golden fired a shot at the center of the net that Haudenshield again made a diving save. With 4:20 remaining in the third frame, Babson broke through. Ellie Powers found an open Caroline DiGiovanni who put a shot on target, Helen DiGiovanni then swiped at the ball as it past to score the go-ahead goal.
Roger Williams (2-1, 0-0 CNE) will host Plymouth State on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 12:00 pm before facing Simmons on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 4:00 pm both on Bayside Field.
