Field Hockey: Hawks Strike Four Times in Second to Knock off Simmons

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University field hockey team defeated Simmons on Wednesday evening, 5-1, on Bayside Field in non-conference action.
 
Simmons, who came into the tilt, unbeaten on the season with a 3-0 record, registered 11 shots in the contest with eight finding their way on target. Roger Williams responded with 29 total shot attempts and 20 shots on goal. Both teams had six penalty corners in the match.
 
The Hawks' offense was powered by Maddy Monahan (Bristol, N.H.) who registered five points with a pair of goals and one assist, with Emma Sheldon (Suffield, Conn.) adding two goals for four points. Grace Rocheleau (West Hartford, Conn.) added a goal, with Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Lily Tobin (Sandwich, Mass.) each adding a goal. In her 15 minutes of action Hannah Brazil (East Sandwich, Mass.) had five saves, while Jill Haudenshield (Sykesville, Md.) picked up the win.
 
The Sharks goalkeeper Jamila Mohamed, had 13 saves in the matchup, while Zoe Schmaling and Alison Michalik each added a defensive save. Anna Tedeschi scored on her sole shot on goal, while Nellie Long picked up the assist.
 
After a slow start to the game, the Hawks' offense erupted, scoring four goals in the second quarter of play, with Monahan striking in the 25th minute of play. Just under 50 seconds later, the Hawks struck again, with Sheldon redirecting a ball from Abigail Stevens (Brewster, Mass.) into the back of the cage.
 
With 3:31 remaining in the opening half, Monahan scored her second goal, unassisted. Rocheleau added one with 1:04 remaining off a pass from King to secure a 4-0 lead heading into the half.
 
In the third quarter, Roger Williams saw Tobin find Monahan for a shot, but Sheldon redirected the ball for her second goal of the game and season.
 
In the fourth quarter the Sharks scored after Long found Tedeschi on a pass, that Tedeschi then put past the Hawks goalkeeper.
 
Roger Williams (4-1, 0-0 CNE) will host Westfield State on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 10:00 am before hosting Wesleyan on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The Hawks will open Conference of New England (CNE) play on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 3:00 pm at Gordon.
