BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University field hockey team put up a dominating performance on Saturday morning against Westfield State in non-conference action, defeating the Owls, 4-0.
The Hawks had 41 shots in the matchup with 24 shots landing on target. The Owls were held without a shot in the contest. The Hawks had 24 penalty corner attempts to the Owls one, while Westfield State made 20 saves.
Elizabeth Duquette (Pittsford, N.Y.) had five shots on goal, with three of those going into the cage for a hat trick, while
Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.) added a goal on four shots on net.
Grace Rocheleau (West Hartford, Conn.) had six shots with four on goal throughout the match.
Emma Sheldon (Suffield, Conn.),
Abigail Stevens (Brewster, Mass.) and
Maddy Monahan (Bristol, N.H.) each had three shots on target.
Emma Gniadek made 19 saves for the Owls, with four goals allowed, playing the entire match in net for Westfield State. Eliana Kaplan picked up a defensive save late in the contest.
The Hawks were the first to strike, scoring in the 11
th minute of action, when a penalty in the scoring area gave, Duquette an opportunity on a penalty stroke. Duquette flicked the ball into the upper left corner of the goal, giving Roger Williams a 1-0 lead.
At the end of the first half, the Hawks had outshot the Owls 18-0, with 11 of the Hawks attempts landing on target. Roger Williams also led in corners 10-1 after the first half.
In the third quarter, King scored after a ball by
Sara Carney (Franklin, Mass.) came in from outside the circle, that King deflected into the back of the net. Shortly after, Duquette scored on a scramble drill in the 35
th minute of action, giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead.
Duquette completed her hat trick in the fourth quarter, scoring with just under 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
Roger Williams (5-1, 0-0 CNE) will close out a string of five straight home contests on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7:00 pm when they host Wesleyan. The Hawks will then travel to Wenham, Mass. for a 3:00 pm Saturday, Sept. 21 matchup at Gordon to begin Conference of New England (CNE) action.
