BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University field hockey team dropped their Tuesday evening matchup against #15 Wesleyan, 4-2, on Bayside Field in non-conference action.
The two teams were tied in shots on target 12-12, but Roger Williams had a 16-14 lead in shots. Wesleyan's Audrey Pace had 10 saves in the matchup with
Jill Haudensheild (Sykesville, Md.) stopping eight of the shots on target she faced. Wesleyan also had eight penalty corner opportunities, to the Hawks six.
Elizabeth Duquette (Pittsford, N.Y.) and
Emma Sheldon (Suffield, Conn.) were responsible for the Roger Williams goals, while
Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.) and
Maddy Monahan (Bristol, N.H.) put four and three shots on goal respectively.
After both teams were held scoreless in the opening quarter, the Hawks were the first team to strike, after Sheldon put a cross into the box, off the foot of Pace, that then bounced into the cage.
With Roger Williams leading 1-0, Helen Deretchin received a ball from Kenzie Kelly, that Derechin then scored leveling the score at 1-1.
In the third quarter, Wesleyan took their first lead of the game, after a save by Haudensheild, Leila Feldman then put her follow up attempt into the net. After Teddy Tolbert scored another goal to give the Cardinal a 3-1 lead with 5:35 remaining in regulation, Duquette scored on a penalty stroke to cut the deficit to one. Kelly then scored her first of the game a few minutes later to seal the contest.
Roger Williams (5-2, 0-0 CNE) will begin conference play on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 3:00 pm at Gordon. The Hawks will then travel to face Lasell on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 5:00 pm.
