Men’s Soccer: Hawks Best Lyons Saturday Afternoon

BRISTOL, R.I – The Roger Williams men's soccer team defeated Wheaton College 1-0 in non-conference action on Saturday, Sep. 14.

The game was a tail of two halves, as Wheaton came to Bayside Field ready to go in the first half. The Lyons outshot the Hawks 5-3 in the first half, landing two of which on Roger Williams keeper Hogan Cain (Nottingham, N.H.). The Hawks were able to get off just three of their own, landing one on net. The Lyons controlled the pace and dominated possession in the Hawks zone. Despite controlling the half, the men headed into the half all square at 0-0.

The second half brought out a new Hawks team, as some adjustments had them bringing the pressure all second half. They fired off seven shots in the half, to the Lyons three. The different maker came on a cross from the left wing by first year Cole Merriam (Haddam, Conn.) to sophomore Ollie Hamilton (North Chittenden, Vt.) who timed a beautiful header into the left side of the net to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. This score would go on to be our final, serving as Roger Williams fourth win in the early season.

Individually, Hogan Cain pitched yet another shutout, and the defense, led by Andre Caceres (Ossining, N.Y.), Brandon Rodriguez (Norwalk, Conn.), and Jason Salley (Durham, Conn.), once again did some major heavy lifting to help give the Hawks a victory. Ollie Hamilton dropped in the only score of the game on an assist from Cole Merriam.

Roger Williams (4-1-1) will head to Babson next Tuesday, Sep. 17 at 4:00 PM and look to improve on their strong start to the season. As for Wheaton (3-2-1), they will head to Maine to take on Bowdon on Tuesday, Sep. 17 at 7:00 PM.
