Men's Soccer: Hawks Avenge Last Years Championship Defeat at WNE

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – The Roger Williams men's soccer team began Conference of New England (CNE) action with a win over Western New England (WNE) on Saturday Sep. 21.

In a rematch from last year's conference championship game, the Hawks were able to avenge their penalty shootout loss in a physical battle against WNE. The action began at the 16-minute mark in this one, when junior Will Schiffer (Cotuit, Mass) found first year Tyler Jastrab (Townsend, Mass.), who netted his second goal of the young season, giving the men an early 1-0 lead. WNE responded with a goal of their own, when Tyler Lewis and Jack Leland found Keegan Reim who evened up the score eight minutes before the first half concluded. Heading into the locker room, the Hawks were outshot 9-1, but were still squared up at 1-1 with the Golden Bears.

The Hawks were able to fire off five shots in the second half, leading to a game winning goal by sophomore Brandon Rodriguez, who pushed the men into the lead with just 15 minutes to play. Roger Williams packed the defense protected the lead, securing the 2-1 victory in their first conference play match.

Despite being outshot 14-6 in the match, the Hawks cashed in on their opportunities, avenging the championship loss that took place on the same field less than a year ago. Next week, Roger Williams (5-2-1) (1-0 CNE) will head back home to play Johnson and Wales University on Monday, Sep. 23 at 4:00 PM. As for the Golden Bears (2-5-2) (0-1 CNE), they will remain at home to face off against Connecticut College on Tuesday, Sep. 24 at 4:00 PM.
