BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team defeated Curry, 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-13), in both team's Conference of New England (CNE) opener on Wednesday evening in the RWU Campus Rec Center.
As a team, the Hawks hit .289 in the match while holding the Colonels to -0.013 hitting on the matchup. The Hawks had 38 kills to the Colonels 14, while also serving 10 aces to Curry's three.
Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) had 10 kills to lead the offensive attacking players, with
Taylor Joyner (Ashburn, Va.) earning six in the match and
Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) having five.
Kaydence Fish (Bedford, N.H.) had four aces and led the team with three blocks in the match, while
Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) had 30 assists with two aces and two blocks.
Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) led the squad with 16 digs, with
Izzy Unsworth (Milford, N.H.) recording 16.
Kyah Earls had eight kills in the match, while Emma St. Cyr had six assists. Earls also had 10 digs in the match for Curry.
In the opening set, after Curry tied the set at 9-9, the Hawks rallied for six straight points with kills by
Lily Winsten (Rockledge, Fla.) and
Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.). After a point in favor of Curry, the Hawks then took a commanding 10-point lead. The Colonels pulled within seven but were unable to climb closer.
The Hawks continued to take advantage of runs, with a 6-4 lead in the second set, Roger Williams used another six straight points to take a 12-4 lead. The two teams maintained the eight-point lead 18-10, but another run took the Hawks to the finish line taking a 4-0 lead.
In the final set, the two teams played to a 15-13 Roger Williams lead, before the Hawks rattled off 10 straight points to end the match.
Roger Williams (8-7, 1-0 CNE) will travel to face Endicott on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 2:00 pm for a matchup in MacDonald Gymnasium, before hosting Suffolk for their third straight CNE matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 6:00 pm.
