BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's tennis team fell to Bridgewater State in doubles play, but recovered for a 6-1 win in non-conference action on the RWU Tennis Courts Friday afternoon.
In doubles action, the No. 3 doubles pairing of
Gracie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) and
Gabby Petroniro (Wolcott, Conn.) defeated Meghan Lotti and Samantha Bettencourt, 6-4. The Bears responded with wins at the No. 1 doubles spot by Madeline Von Ruden and Mackenzie Silveira, 6-3, Morgan Smith and Aislyn Kelliher then clinched the doubles point for the Bears, with a 7-5 win over
Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) and
Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.).
In singles action, the Hawks rebounded, with first-year
Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) earning a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.
Gianna Ferraro (Westerly, R.I.) then followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 1 singles spot, putting the Hawks up 2-1 with four matches left to play. Petroniro then closed out the No. 6 singles spot with a 6-3, 6-4 win before Palmieri clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles.
Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) earned a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mackenzie Silveira at the No. 2 doubles spot, before No. 4 doubles went in favor of Mancini who earned a 7-6, 6-1 win.
Roger Williams (6-2, 0-1 CNE) will take on Suffolk on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 5:30 pm at the Lexington Tennis Club, before hosting Gordon for their second of two straight Conference of New England (CNE) matches.
