NORTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's tennis team edged out the Lyons of Wheaton College in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon, 4-3, at the Clark Tennis Courts.
In doubles action, Alissa Ortiz and Kara Greenlee took the top doubles match, 6-1, but the Hawks took the No. 2 doubles match, with
Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) and
Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) earning a 6-2 victory, leveling the doubles portion of play. Maya Brennan and Taylor Wilson then took the No. 3 doubles match, 7-5, taking the doubles point.
The Lyons tacked on a second point after Taylor Wilson took the No. 5 singles match over Palmieri, 6-1, 6-3. Ortiz then added another point to take a 3-0 advantage after winning her match 6-4, 6-2, but the Hawks responded with a three-set win by
Gianna Ferraro (Westerly, R.I.), 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, cutting the match score to 3-1. Mancini picked up another point for Roger Williams with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) victory at No. 4 singles, with
Gabrielle Petroniro (Wolcott, Conn.) earning a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory to level the score at 3-3.
In the No. 2 singles match,
Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) picked up the clinching point for the Hawks with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 victory, securing the match for the Hawks.
Roger Williams (3-1, 0-0 CNE) will host Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 4:00 p.m. at the RWU Tennis Courts. The Hawks will then participate in the Newport Grass Court Tournament at the International Tennis Hall of Fame on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 12:00 p.m.
