BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team split their two matches on Saturday afternoon in the Clark Athletics Center, falling to Trinity 3-1 (15-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-18), before rebounding for a 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-19) victory over Bridgewater State at the UMass Boston Invitational.
Against Trinity, the Bantams led in kills, 51-41, aces, 10-8, and blocks, 10-4, in the match. Defensively the two teams were separated by six digs, with the Bantams recording 73 to the Hawks' 67.
Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) led the Hawks with 13 kills in the match, while
Claire Davis (Trumbull, Conn.) and
Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) followed with seven and five respectively.
Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) and
Emma Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) were the top two in aces and assists for the Hawks while
Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) added 17 digs.
Eva Lekovic had 16 kills for Trinity, with Caroline Howell registering 20 assists in the match. Scarlett Jago led the team in digs with 14.
Trinity opened the match with a 6-2 advantage, but the Hawks rattled off eight straight points to take a 10-6 edge in the opening set. Trinity maintained the four-point deficit, but the Hawks rattled off another string of five straight points to take an 18-9 advantage. Trinity cut the deficit to as few as five, but the Hawks controlled the rest of the set.
The two teams battled to a 19-19 draw in the second set, but the Bantams rattled off three straight points to take a 22-19 lead. The Hawks leveled the score at 22 , but Trinity again found a three point run to end the set.
In the third, Trinity held an 10-8 lead after a kill by
Izzy Unsworth (Milford, N.H.), but Trinity again used a seven point run to take control on their way to a set win. In the fourth set of the match, Trinity again used a pair of four point runs to take control.
In their match against Bridgewater State, The Hawks earned 33 total kills in the match, with West accounting for 12 of them. Mattiucci also added 17 assists, with Bosco chipping in 12 helpers, and Hernandez had 15 digs defensively. The Hawks defense also saw help from West and
Kaydence Fish (Bedford, N.H.) who recorded three blocks each in the match.
After trailing 6-4, the Hawks rattled off five straight point to take the lead. Bridgewater State then scored twice, before the Hawks went on another five-point run, taking control of the set.
In the second frame, the Hawks jumped out to a 6-1 lead, and were later able to extend it to 10 points leading 17-7. The Hawks would take the second set by 13 points, before closing out the match after taking an 11-1 advantage early in the third set, on their way to a 25-19 win.
Roger Williams (5-1, 0-0 CNE) will host Tufts on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 6:00 pm before taking part in the Brandeis Invitational beginning on Friday, Sept. 13.
