Women's Basketball: Hawks Cruise Past Wentworth, Improve to 9-2 in CNE Play

Box Score Boston, Mass. – The Roger Williams women's basketball team handled Wentworth easily, 57-27, improving their record to 12-6 overall, and 9-2 in conference play. The win goes down as their fifth in the last six games.
 
The Hawks held the Leopards to just 27 points in the win, their lowest opponent point total on the season. The Hawks needed just 57 of their own to secure the blowout victory, which ties a season-low for them.
 
The game got off to a slow start offensively, with both teams coming up empty handed in the first 10 possessions of the game. Elizabeth Dufrane (Falls Church, Va.) was able to get a jumper to go to get the scoring under way, about two and a half minutes into the game. Wentworth responded with a quick 6-0 run to take the lead, before a pair of Hawk free throws, followed by two layups, gave the lead back to the Hawks. That would be the last time they trailed in the game. The two teams combined for just 19 points in the first frame, with the Hawks leading 11-8.
 
Roger Williams would go on to dominate the second quarter, outscoring the Leopards 14-4, forcing the opponent into 1-8 shooting from the field, to go along with six turnovers. Roger Williams would head into the half with a commanding 25-12 lead.
 
The third quarter was more of the same for the women, once again holding the opponent to just six points and 2-11 shooting in the process. The Hawks would expand their lead up to 27, putting the game out of reach altogether.
 
The Hawks would go on to defeat the Leopards 57-27. Altogether, the Hawks dominated the opponent, forcing them into 28 turnovers, outrebounding them by nine, and shooting almost 10% better from the field.
 
Individually, Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) led the women with 14 points, chipping in five rebounds in the process. E. Dufrane would add 12 of her own, racking up seven steals and three blocks in the process. Meg Qualey (Woburn, Mass.) led the unit on the glass with eight rebounds, while Lilli Clark (Willimantic, Conn.) was not far behind with seven.
 
The Hawks (12-6, 9-2 CNE) will travel back up to Boston on Saturday to take on Suffolk to open up the month of February. The last time the two teams met, Roger Williams edged out the opponent. 67-62.
