BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams women's basketball team defeated Suffolk in comeback fashion in their return to Conference of New England play Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks started slow in the matchup, falling behind 25-16 to begin the afternoon. The women bounced back in the second quarter, playing the Rams just about even before heading into the half time break. After some defensive adjustments, the Hawks held the Rams to just 15 and four points in the third and fourth quarters respectively, giving them the second half come from behind victory. Roger Williams held the opponent to just two points in the final eight minutes in the game, outscoring the Rams 10-2 in the process. They forced the opponent into 13% shooting in the final frame. The stellar second half defense helped secure the 67-62 victory.
The Hawks led the Rams in the turnover margin, turning it over just 12 times to the Rams 22. In addition, the women threw 15 assists to the Rams 10. Suffolk, however, outrebounded the Hawks by 15 in the loss, 42-27.
Individually, the Hawks were led by
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.),
Lilli Clark (Willimantic, Conn.) and E. Dufrane (Falls Church, Va.) in the victory. Coppola and Clark each tied for a game-high 15 points, with Dufrane adding 14 of her own. Coppola and Clark also led the Hawks in the rebounding column, grabbing six rebounds a piece. Dufrane added five assists as well.
Chloe Richardson (Norwell, Mass.) chipped in a game-high four steals.
The Hawks move to 7-4 overall with the win and remain undefeated in CNE action at 4-0. For their next matchup, they will travel to Western New England on Tuesday, Jan. 4 to take on the Golden Bears.
