Field Hockey: Hawks Take Match Over In-State Rival Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team used a three goal third quarter as they powered through in-state rival Salve Regina on Wednesday evening at Gaudet Field.

Roger Williams outshot the Seahawks 24-13, while putting 20 shots on target to Salve Regina's nine. The Hawks also won the corner battle 11-4.

Chelsea King had two goals and an assist, while Maddy Monahan earned three points with a goal and assist. Hannah Brazil made six saves on nine shots faced in the win, while Salve Regina's Siany Ortez had 14 saves in the contest. Georgia Costello had two goals and Julia Decker tallied a single goal and assist for three points.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Hawks struck 2:44 into the second frame, as Libby Corsetti found King, who scored her 19th goal of the season. The Seahawks then took the lead with Costello scoring back-to-back goals just 37 seconds apart in the 23rd minute of action. Eva Wood was able to level the score when King inserted a ball to Wood, which Wood then finished in the back of the net.

Coming out of the half, Julia Decker was on the receiving end of a pass from Julia Decker, before a penalty stroke by Elizabeth Duquette leveled the score at 3-3. Monahan tallied a goal in the 40th minutes, ahead of King scoring off a helper by Monahan just under a minute later to take the match.

Roger Williams (11-4, 5-0 CNE) will travel to Endicott on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1:00 pm for a CNE match against the Gulls. The Hawks will then host Keene State on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 4:00 pm ahead of a Senior Day match with Western New England on Saturday, Oct. 25.
