BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team defeated Gordon on Wednesday evening, 1-0, after a match that saw a penalty as the decider in a Conference of New England (CNE) match.
Roger Williams out shot the Fighting Scots 12-8 while placing seven attempts on frame to Gordon's two. The Hawks also gathered six corners in the match while Gordon was held to one, with fouls being 17-5 against Gordon. Eliot Pannaccione (Pepperell, Mass.) made a pair of saves in the match, while Riley Calemmo had six for the Fighting Scots in net.
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams with three shots, while the Hawks were unable to find the target, The RWU offense came to life, tallying nine shots putting seven of their second half attempts on target. The Hawks also were able to draw four corners in the second half to help spark their offensive opportunities.
With 2:27 remaining in the match, a throw in went into the box, where a Gordon defender made contact with his hand for drawing a call from the official inside of the box. The chance set up a penalty kick opportunity for Will Schiffer (Cotuit, Mass.) against Calemmo, where Schiffer fired his shot into the lower right side of the net, giving RWU the lead and win.
Gordon (8-5-2, 5-2-0 CNE) will host Endicott on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7:00 pm for their Senior Night. The Fighting Scots will then close out the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
Roger Williams (11-1-4, 6-1-1 CNE) will travel to Nichols on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 12:00 pm before hosting Wentworth on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 4:00 pm to close out the regular season. The CNE Tournament will begin on Saturday, Nov. 1.
