Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team outlasted Western New England (WNE), 2-1, in a Conference of New England (CNE) matchup.
The Hawks started strong, firing two shots in the first nine minutes of the match. They scored their first goal in the 12th minute, coming off of Tyler Jastrab (Townsend, MA) off of a ball by Louis Hawkins (Norwich, Conn.).
WNE answered back with a goal of their own in the 22nd minute by Cole Casinghino, assisted by Tyler Lewis. Despite opportunities for both teams, the game would stay at 1-1 through the rest of the first half. The half ended with Roger Williams and WNE even on shots 6-6. However, the Golden Bears led shots on target, 3-2. RWU had the advantage on corners, 3-1.
The second half ramped up the energy, with WNE being called for 10 fouls, while Roger Williams was called for five. The difference maker for the Hawks came in the 75th minute, when Dylan Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) found the back of the net off of a pass from Ollie Hamilton (North Chittenden, Vt.).
The Golden Bears outshot the Hawks 14-9 on the day, but stayed even at 4-4 shots on goal. The contest was a battle, WNE tallied 16 fouls on the day and RWU tallied 12. The Hawks were issued one yellow card, while the Golden Bears were issued two yellows.
Roger Williams (7-0-4, 3-0-1 CNE) will resume their game against Clark on Monday, Oct.6 before hosting Suffolk on Saturday, Oct. 11 on Bayside Field. WNE (3-7-1, 2-2 CNE) will host Curry on Tuesday, Oct. 7 before traveling to Gordon on Saturday, Oct. 11.
