BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team delivered a dominant performance on Tuesday night, defeating Curry College 68–44 in the Campus Rec Center. The Hawks controlled the game wire-to-wire, never trailing and holding the lead for more than 39 minutes as they moved to a strong early-season victory.
RWU's defensive presence and relentless pace immediately set the tone. The Hawks forced 17 Curry turnovers, converting them into 14 points, while committing only eight turnovers of their own. Roger Williams also owned the interior, outscoring Curry 36–20 in the paint and collecting 19 offensive rebounds that fueled 19 second-chance points.
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) led the Hawks with 17 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and a block. Lilli Clark (Willimantic, Conn.) followed with a double-double performance of 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while adding three steals. Chloe Richardson (Norwell, Mass.) added 11 points and three assists, and Ava Azzaro (Northampton, Mass.) chipped in 10 points, rounding out four Hawks in double figures.
Roger Williams shot 36.5 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from three while holding the Colonels to just 30 percent shooting overall. The Hawks also posted nine steals and four blocks—three of which came from Meg Qualey (Woburn, Mass.), who added five rebounds in a standout defensive effort.
Curry was led by Ella Palanza, who scored 16 points with nine rebounds. Sophie Hilbrunner added 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists, while Lauren Morse gave the Colonels eight points.
Despite 22 bench points from Curry, RWU's pressure and tempo consistently kept the Colonels from gaining momentum. The Hawks took their largest lead of the night—68–44—with under a minute remaining, closing out a complete game on both ends of the floor.
Roger Williams (4-1, 1-0 CNE) returns to action later this week at home against Tufts on Friday at 5:30 PM.
