BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team reached the conference title game for the third consecutive season, after defeating No. 3 University of New England, 6-1, in the Conference of New England (CNE) Semifinals on Bayside on Wednesday evening.
The Hawks outshot UNE 12-8, with seven on goal to the Nor'Easters' six. Roger Williams also had the 11-7 advantage on corner kicks. Roger Williams was given one yellow card and two green cards, while UNE had one green card in the match.
The Hawks opened the game with a goal in the second minute of play by Hannah Timbrouck (Kingston, N.Y.) on a ball sent from Maddy Monahan (Bristol, N.H.). A little over five minutes later, Anna Kruggel (Scituate, Mass.) scored on a penalty corner sent in from Chelsea King (Albany, N.Y.).
The Nor'Easters were held without a shot in the first quarter as Roger Williams tallied two more goals in the last 5 minutes of play. The first coming from Timbrouck on a pass from Monahan and the second from King assisted by Grace Rocheleau (West Hartford, Conn.), giving the Hawks a 4-0 lead. With the goal, King became the first player in program history to tally 200 career points.
The Nor'Easters started to come alive as they had a flurry of shots in the second period, but could not convert. UNE finally had a goal in the third quarter as Kate Kelso scored assisted by Shelly Tremblay on the penalty corner insert from Abby Stevens in the 32nd minute.
However, the Hawks responded in the 42nd minute with a goal from Monahan assisted by Kruggel off of a penalty corner by King. Roger Williams scored again two minutes later on a shot by King to give the Hawks the 6-1 lead at the end of the third period. In the fourth period, UNE had a corner and two shots, but could not make up the difference.
Hannah Brazil (Sandwich, Mass.) was solid in goal tonight for the Hawks, facing five shots and saving four on the day.
Roger Williams (15-5, 6-1 CNE) will await the opponent and location of the program's third consecutive CNE Championship appearance on Saturday, Nov. 8, as No. 1 Endicott will face No. 4 WNE in Beverly, Mass. at 7:00pm Wednesday night.
