BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team was unable to complete a second half comeback in their season opener on Saturday afternoon inside the Campus Rec Center, falling to Clark (MA), 74-67.
RWU shot 37.7 percent from the field and 20.8 percent from behind the arc, while converting 76.2 percent at the free throw line. The Hawks scored 34 points in the paint and produced 22 points off turnovers. Clark collected 55 rebounds in the matchup and held a 17-5 advantage in second-chance points, shooting 41.4 percent overall.
Clark was led by Quentin Pridgen with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Reid Neumann added 17 points, knocking down five three-pointers. Boluwasefe John also scored nine points with eight rebounds.
Finn Miller (Stamford, Conn.) paced the Hawks offensively with 20 points and three assists, while Ryan Hammarlund (Southington, Conn.) added 17 points. Ryan Higgins (Boston, Mass.) contributed 10 points and five rebounds for RWU, while the Hawks bench totaled 20 points in the outing.
After trailing 48-30 at halftime, the Hawks surged back in the second half, outscoring Clark 37-26 and cutting the deficit down to as little as four in the closing minutes. However, Clark was able to convert late free throws to hold off the RWU rally.
Roger Williams (0-1) will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 12 when they travel to Coast Guard at 7:00 pm, followed by a home contest against Emmanuel (Mass.) on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 3:30 pm.
