BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams women's basketball team defeated Gordon College, 87-54 on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Rec Center Gymnasium. The home win came on Senior Day for the Hawks, where seniors Reese Cordero (Whitman, Mass.),
Caroline Aaron (Wrentham, Mass.),
Abrielle Racine (Mooers Fork, N.Y.), and
Elizabeth Dufrane (Falls Church, Va.) were recognized.
To open up the first frame, both teams traded baskets with Gordon holding a 12-11 lead with 3:30 to play in the quarter. The last 3:30 was all Hawks, as they would close out on a 10-0 run following a
Meg Qualey (Woburn, Mass.) layup on a feed from
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.). Roger Williams would continue their run into the second quarter, taking command of a 28-12 lead two minutes in, before a Naomi Nicholson three-point jumper would stop the bleeding. The Hawks would maintain their double digit until the four-minute mark, when they add another 9-0 run to finish off the half. The run was capped off by a buzzer beater half court heave knocked down by Reese Cordero to give the Hawks a 44-25 lead. The Hawks massive first half lead was due in part to outrebounding the opponent 31-16 over the course of the first 20 minutes.
Out of the locker room, Gordon provided a much better effort on the glass being outrebounded by just one in the third frame. They would outscore the Hawks 21-17 in the quarter and trail by 15 heading into the fourth. In the final frame the Hawks would get back to their rebounding ways, dominating the glass to the tune of 16-4, and coast their way into a 33-point victory, 87-54.
On senior night, all four seniors would total six or more points each, headlined by
Elizabeth Dufrane's 16-point effort. Dufrane would add four assists and five steals in the victory as well.
Sophia Coppola would pour in a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds, in just 26 minutes of play.
Lilli Clark (Willimantic, Conn.) would chip in a game-high 11 rebounds for the Hawks as well. For Gordon, Ami Rivera would lead the way with 15 points and six rebounds in the loss.
Following the win, Roger Williams moves to 17-7 overall, and 14-3 in Conference of New England play. They will travel to Endicott next, on Wednesday, Feb. 19 where they will look for their fourth straight win. Following Endicott, the women will travel back home to take on the University of New England on Feb. 22 to wrap up their regular season.
