BRISTOL, R.I. – In a matchup that came down to the final minute of action, the Bernasconi Cup returns to Salve Regina after the Seahawks downed the Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team, 7-6, in non-conference action.
Chris Koltzan led Salve Regina with two goals and an assist, while Daniel Naglieri orchestrated the offense with three assists, including one on the game winner.
The Hawks saw six different goal scorers in the matchup, with
Eric Brooks and
Matt Kennedy scoring the bookend goals for the Hawks, while also dishing out assists.
Brady Lee,
Malcome Steegstra,
Kyle Zirn, and
Ben Selle were the other goal scorers for RWU.
Defensively, Zirn had two caused turnovers and six ground balls in the matchup.
Salve Regina dominated the circle, winning 14-of-17 face-offs, led by specialist Justin Haverly. They also outshot the Hawks 44-20, but
Aaron D'Aversa made 15 saves in those opportunities.
The Hawks opened with the first two goals of the match in the opening 6:25 of play in the game, but Koltzan struck with 6:51 remaining in the opening frame to cut into the deficit. In the second Steegstra scored the lone goal of the frame just 56 seconds to the quarter as the Hawks took a 3-1 lead into the second half.
In the third quarter Salve Regina took control, scoring four goals while holding the Hawks to one, as they took a 5-4 lead into the final frame. After an early goal by Mason Barbone, the Hawks saw Selle and Brooks respond to level the contest, with 8:31 remaining in regulation.
After a clear by Salve with 1:56 remaining, the Seahawks controlled possession ahead of Christopher Bethony finishing a shot by D'Aversa off a pass from Naglieri.
Roger Williams (0-2, 0-0 CNE) will host MIT on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 12:00 pm before hosting Emmanuel on Wendesday, Fab. 26 and Emerson on Saturday, Mar. 1.
