CLERMONT, FL. – The Roger Williams softball team fell to Montclair State in game two of their double header, pushing their record to 2-4 to start the season. The loss came via walk off fashion, as a fielder's choice would bring home the winning run for the Red Hawks.
Cheyanne Weigand recorded the win for the Red Hawks despite recording just one out, while starting pitcher Sage Rizzi went 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs. Rizzi added three strikeouts and two walks in her outing. For Roger Williams,
Sophia Bruno received a tough-luck loss after a ground out and a fielder choice would bring home the game-winning run while she was on the mound. Hawks starter
Ava Fairbanks pitched 5.1 innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs, adding three strikeouts in the process.
After a scoreless top half of the first, Montclair St. got on the board first via an RBI groundout that came off of the bat of Dylan Boles. The Red Hawks would hold Roger Williams scoreless in the top half of the second and third innings as well. In the bottom of the third, Carlee Iannone would single to short, with Boles coming around to score in the process.
The top of the fourth would be when the Hawks would get on the board, starting off with a single to right center by
Kelsey Burr. Layleigh O'Connor would single to center giving the Hawks runners on first and second with no one out. Following a strikeout,
Shannon Starratt would draw a walk to load the bases for
Lucy Maurao, would drive in
Jamie Wells (pinch runner for Burr) via a sacrifice fly.
Vianna Chamberlin would single to drive in another for the Hawks and make 2-2.
Both teams would go scoreless in the fifth inning, with Roger Williams going scoreless in the top half of the sixth as well. In the bottom of the sixth, the Red Hawks would get the bats going again, beginning with a leadoff double, followed by a ground out to push the runner to third. A single would give the Red Hawks the lead back at 3-2, however they were not done yet as they would record two more hits in the inning, bringing around two more runs. They would lead 5-2 heading into the seventh.
RWU would respond with their last at bats in the top of the seventh, starting the inning with a walk, pop out followed by a single and hit by pitch to load the bases with one out.
Christina Denovellis would single down the line bringing home two and bringing the game to within one run 5-4. Starratt would keep the rally going with another RBI single to knot it up 5-5.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Red Hawks would leadoff with back-to-back walks, followed by a groundout that would give them runners on second and third with just one out. Nolly Colligan would reach on a fielder's choice, knocking In the game-winning run and walking the Red Hawks off with a 6-5 win.
Roger Williams moves to 2-4 following the loss, with four games to play on their Spring Break trip. They will matchup again SUNY Polytechnic on March 13 followed by Lake Forest for their second game of their double header.
