PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team fell on Tuesday to Bowdoin, in the opening game of the Spring Fling Women's Lacrosse Tournament at Publix Sports Park, 18-8.
The Hawks were outshot 31-17, while Bowdoin placed 29 of their attempts on target. The Hawks also committed 20 turnovers, while going 12-for-17 on clears to Bowdoin six turnovers, going 14-for-16 in their clearance attempts. The Hawks won 20 draw controls to Bowdoin's nine.
Bowdoin's primary scoring option was Lauren Burke who tallied eight goals on nine shots, with Molly Reed finishing second with four goals off six shots on the day. Grace Harvey also scored multiple points with three points off two goals and one assist. Defensively, Kristin Svahn had two caused turnovers with Katie Athanasoulas tallying a pair as well. Hannah Rubin picked up the win in cage, with five saves.
For Roger Williams, the Hawks saw
Kimmy Creegan score four points off four goals with a pair of ground balls and three draw controls.
Allie Shamberger had three points with two goals and an assists, with two groundballs, while
Emma Terino had thre draw contols with a goal in the game.
Bowoding struck, 3:26 into the contest with Burke scoring after a Rogeer Williams failed clear attempt. The Hawks answered just over two minutes later, when Creegan finished on her shot attempt. The Hawks had the opportunity to score off a free position just under a minute later in the contest, but Shamberger's shot attempt ran wide of the post. Burke and Ellie Fabrio each tallied a goal, ahead of a free position goal by Harvery, who put the score at 4-1 in favor of Bowdoin. Burke added another tally, taking a 5-1 lead into the second quarter.
Bowdoin's run continued into the second frame, with HArver and Reed scoring pushing the Polar Bear lead to six.
Soleil Dubois put a tally on the board for the Hawks, but Burke added another one, 47 seconds later. The Hawks struck twice to end the half, trailing 8-4 at the break.
After Shamberger found Creegan to open up the second half, Bowdoin and the Hawks traded goals back and forth, before A goal by Maya Imaeda with 2:46 remaining in the third quarter, sparked an 8-1 run to end the game.
Roger Williams (1-4, 0-0 CNE) will take on Westfield State on Thursday, Mar. 13 at 2:00 pm EST to close out their Spring Break Trip to Florida. The Hawks will then host Babson on Tuesday, Mar. 18 at 4:00 pm, before opening Conference of New England (CNE) play on Wednesday, Mar. 26 at 4:00 pm.
