Baseball: Wisconsin-Superior Holds of Ninth Inning Rally as Hawks Fall

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The University of Wisconsin-Superior fended off a late ninth-inning surge by Roger Williams University to secure a 5-3 victory Wednesday night at Chain of Lakes.

Wis.-Superior (5-6) took an early lead, plating two runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Tanner Voight and a groundout by Payton Steiner. The Yellowjackets extended their advantage to 5-0 by the fourth inning, capitalizing on a wild pitch and a fielder's choice.

Roger Williams (2-4) struggled to generate offense until the ninth inning, when the Hawks mounted a three-run rally. After Chris Faraca reached on an error, Ty Cali and Griffin Ruffner followed with singles, with Ruffner's hit driving in the first run. Ethan Keeney and Nick Sheehan each drew walks, forcing in another run before a wild pitch allowed Ruffner to score. However, Owen Hibbard struck out with the tying run on base, sealing the win for Wis.-Superior.

Josh Pritchard (1-0) earned the win for the Yellowjackets, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out five. Hugh Cyhowski (0-1) took the loss for Roger Williams, surrendering three runs on six hits over 2 2/3 innings. Adam Jensen recorded the final two outs for Wis.-Superior to earn the save.

Brian O'Dwyer led Wis.-Superior's offense with three hits and two runs, while Chase Oxborough reached base three times and added an RBI. For Roger Williams, Sam Weigel tripled, and Ruffner had a two-hit performance with an RBI.

Roger Williams will look to bounce back Friday when they take on Beloit in a doubleheader.  The Hawks will then face Mount Union on Saturday, Mar. 13 to round out their Spring Break Trip.
