Men's Lacrosse: Kean's Explosive Third Quarter Downs Hawks

NEWARK, Del. – The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team scored the final five goals of the match on Wednesday afternoon at Delaware Stadium, but it was not enough to overcome the Cougars of Kean in non-conference action, 12-9.
 
The Hawks outshot the Cougars 47-44, but Kean had 25 shots on goal to Roger Williams' 24. The Hawks had 29 turnovers in the matchup while Kean had 24, but Kean went 19-for-25 in clears, while the Hawks tallied 20 clears on 26 attempts. The Courgars had 39 ground balls with the Hawks picking up 27, while faceoffs went 12-10 in favor of RWU.
 
Nick Thorne had five points with three goals and two assists in the game to lead the offense, while Dylan Johnson added four points with Tommy Hamtil, Aarin Arbore, and Jacob Dvoor each having a goal and an assist in the game. Nick Paterno made 15 saves, while allowing nine goals, with a stout defense being led by Dvoor with two caused turnvoers and five ground balls. Tyler Nolan, Jonathan Ruff, and Kenny Yeager each added a pair of caused turnovers.
 
For Roger Williams, Ryan Vendetti tallied two goals and dished out two helpers, while Matt Hemmert scored three times, placing five shots on goal. Jack Kester and Carter Shelton each had two points in the contest. Aaron D'Aversa had 13 saves on the day, while Shelton and Zirn each had two caused turnovers on the day. David Rizzo took 12 of his 22 faceoff attempts in the loss.
 
Kean opened the scoring, as Nick Thorne struck 4:24 into the contest. Another turnover by the Hawks, allowed Aarin Arbore to pick up the ball head up field and fire a shot into the cage, putting the Cougars up 2-0. The Hawks finally broke through as Malcolm Steegstra scored his ninth goal of the season, with Anton Updale answering for Kean, before Jacob Dvoor closed out the first quarter with a goal with 1:06 left, taking a 4-1 lead into the second quarter.
 
In the second quarter, Kean came out scoring two straight extending their lead to five, before Kester sparked a three goal run for the Hawks, with Hemmert tallying his first and dsecond of the game, cutting the deficit to two. Johnson then found Hamtil for a goal, ending the half with Kean leading 7-4.
 
In the third frame, Kean took control, scoring five unanswered goals, with the Hawks answering by doing the same in the second half, but it was not enough as Kean held on for the win.
 
Roger Williams (3-5, 0-0 CNE) will host Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday, Mar. 15 at 1:00 pm.  The Hawks will then host Hartford on Wednesday, Mar. 26 at 7:00 pm to open up Conference of New England (CNE) action.
