WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Roger Williams University baseball team fell to Mount Union in a high-scoring contest, 13-7, on Saturday at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
The Hawks struck first in the opening inning when Rory Lynch (Easton, Conn.) delivered an RBI single to center, bringing home Mike Masino (Bayville, N.J.) for a 1-0 lead. However, Mount Union responded emphatically in the second inning, putting up five runs. Christian Tsouras tripled to right-center to bring in one run before a sacrifice fly by Coby Viamonte and a two-run double from Andrew Witte gave the Raiders a commanding 5-1 lead.
Roger Williams answered back in the third with a five-run inning of their own. Nick Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) started the rally with an RBI single to center, scoring Ethan Keeney (Harwich, Mass.). A throwing error allowed another run to cross before Lynch drove in another on a sacrifice fly. Dennis Folan (Medfield, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice, bringing in the tying run, and Will Florio (San Jose, Calif.) added an RBI single to push the Hawks ahead, 6-5.
Mount Union quickly tied it in the bottom of the third when Logan Ickes tripled to score Josh Castello. The Raiders reclaimed the lead in the fifth when Castello and Brian Fox each drove in a run, making it 8-6.
The sixth inning proved to be the deciding factor as Mount Union capitalized on a big rally. Jared Lehman lined a two-run single up the middle before Tsouras added a two-run double, extending the Raiders' lead to 12-6. They tacked on another run in the seventh off an error, stretching their advantage to 13-6.
Folan provided one final highlight for the Hawks in the eighth with a solo home run to right field, cutting the deficit to 13-7, but they couldn't muster a late comeback.
On the mound, Roger Williams used a combination of pitchers, with Conor Quinlan (Taunton, Mass.) taking the loss after allowing three runs in three innings. Mount Union's Lehman earned the win, striking out four across five innings, while Connor Phillips picked up the save with four strong innings in relief.
Roger Williams falls to 3-6 on the season, while Mount Union improves to 5-5. The Hawks will look to return to Rhode Island and focus on their next matchup against WPI on Tuesday March 18th at 3:00 pm in Worcester, Mass.
