Baseball: WPI's Bats Too Much for Hawks in Non-Conference Play

NORTHBORO, Mass. – Roger Williams University fell to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) 13-1 on Tuesday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex, as the Engineers' offense powered them to the win.

WPI (7-3) was led by Tommy Burns, who went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Zachary Roethlein also contributed a solo homer, while Andrew Cash added three hits and three RBIs. Leadoff hitter Jacob Wiberg was a key contributor, recording three hits and scoring twice. On the mound, starting pitcher Luke Blandino (2-0) earned the win, allowing just one run on three hits over six innings, striking out eight.

For Roger Williams, Will Florio provided the team's lone RBI with a run-scoring double in the second inning. He finished 2-for-2 with a walk. Catcher Griffin Ruffner also added a hit and scored the team's only run. Starting pitcher Evan Beattie (0-2) took the loss, giving up seven runs, five earned, on six hits over two innings.

WPI jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning thanks in part to an RBI fielder's choice by Cash and a double from Jack Zawacki. The Engineers extended their advantage with four more runs in the second, highlighted by a two-run double from Matt Shea and another RBI double from Cash.

Roethlein's solo home run in the third made it 8-1, and WPI continued to pile on with three more runs in the fifth on Burns' three-run homer to left center. The Engineers capped the scoring in the eighth when Roethlein reached on an error, allowing a run to score, followed by a double from Chuck Cappello to bring home another run.

Roger Williams struggled to generate offense, finishing with just five hits and striking out nine times. WPI pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts while issuing only two walks.

Roger Williams (3-7, 0-0 CNE) will travel to face UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday, Mar. 19 at 3:00 pm in North Dartmouth.  The Hawks will then host Keene State on Thursday, Mar. 20 at 3:00 p, before opening Conference of New England (CNE) play on Saturday, Mar. 22 at 12:00 pm on Paolino Field as they host Suffolk for a doubleheader.
