Softball: Wheaton Holds Off Roger Williams in Seventh, Hawks Drop Game One

BRISTOL, R.I. — Despite a late-inning surge, the Roger Williams University softball team fell 4-2 to Wheaton College in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader at Paolino Field.

Ashley Klingberg led the Hawks at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a stolen base, while Hailey Williams delivered the team's biggest hit of the day, a two-run homer in the seventh inning, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Christina Denovellis also contributed offensively with a pair of hits.

On the mound, Raegen Germano (2-3) pitched a complete game, striking out eight while allowing four runs on six hits across seven innings. Wheaton's Sofia DeLaRosa (7-1) held Roger Williams scoreless until the seventh, earning the win with a complete-game effort, surrendering seven hits and striking out six. Peyton Blankenheim-Brown led the Lyons with a 2-for-4 performance, tallying a double, a triple, and two runs scored, while Barry contributed two RBIs.

Wheaton (13-2) set the tone early, scoring twice in the first inning. Juliette Zito reached on a leadoff walk and Grace Dibacco followed with a single before a pair of bases-loaded walks to Taylor Barry and Maggie Caron put the Lyons up 2-0.

The Lyons extended their lead in the fifth inning when Blankenheim-Brown doubled and later scored on a Barry RBI single. Blankenheim-Brown added another key hit in the seventh, tripling and crossing the plate on a Riley Dolan single to make it 4-0.

Roger Williams mounted a comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh. Klingberg led off with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error, setting the stage for Williams, who launched a two-run home run to left field. However, DeLaRosa retired the next two batters to seal the win for Wheaton.

Roger Williams (7-6, 0-0 CNE) will face off against the Lyons in game two of their doubleheader set to begin around 4:40 pm.
