Softball: Hawks Complete Sweep as Wells Brings in Two RBIs

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team completed a sweep of Gordon College with a 4-1 victory in the second game of their Conference of New England (CNE) doubleheader at Paolino Field on Friday afternoon.

Pitcher Kiera Quadros was dominant in the circle for Roger Williams, tossing a complete game while allowing just four hits and one run. She struck out two and walked only one en route to her fourth win of the season.

Offensively, Christina Denovellis led the Hawks, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Lucy Maurao also contributed with a 2-for-3 performance, including a double and an RBI, while Vianna Chamberlin went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Jaime Wells added two RBIs, both coming off sacrifice flies.

Roger Williams broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning. Denovelli led off with a single and advanced to third on Maurao's double. Chamberlin then delivered an RBI single to score Denovelli, and Wells followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Maurao, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

The Hawks tacked on another run in the fourth when Foley singled, stole second, and came home on another sacrifice fly by Wells, extending the lead to 3-0.

Gordon (5-11, 0-4 CNE) managed to break through in the sixth inning when Ami Rivera singled and later scored on a double by Samantha Perkins, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Roger Williams responded in the bottom half of the inning as Denovellis doubled to right field and later came around to score on a steal attempt by Maurao that allowed Maurao to find a gap, making it 4-1.

Quadros then retired the Fighting Scots in order in the seventh to seal the victory.

Roger Williams (9-7, 2-0 CNE) will be back in action on Saturday, Mar. 29 at 12:00 pm for a doubleheader against Hartford.  The Hawks will then host Emmanuel on Wednesday, Apr. 2 at 2:30 pm on Paolino Field.
