WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The Roger Williams University softball team fell to Hartford 7-3 in a Conference of New England matchup on Saturday afternoon at Hartford. The loss dropped Roger Williams to 9-8 on the season, while Hartford improved to 9-7.
Hartford's Olivia Wolk led the charge, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a stolen base, while Alexis Sealey contributed a double and an RBI. On the mound, Carly Mayhood struck out seven over 6.1 innings for the win. For Roger Williams, Hailey Williams had a strong performance, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Lucy Maurao added a hit, a run scored, and an RBI.
Roger Williams struck first with two runs in the top of the second inning. Maurao drew a walk and later stole second. A single by Williams brought home Maurao and tied the game at 1-1 after Hartford scored in the first on an RBI single by Wolk. A bases-loaded walk drawn by Adelie Beebe in the bottom of the second put Hartford back ahead 2-1 before the Hawks added another in the third when Sydney Matz stole home.
Roger Williams responded in the third with an RBI single from Maurao to tie the game at 2-2, but Hartford reclaimed the lead in the fourth on a two-out RBI single from Wolk, scoring Gia Miccio.
Hartford broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring three times. A double by Sealey plated one run before Wolk added another RBI hit to make it 6-2. A single by Ella Zobel capped the scoring for Hartford. Roger Williams attempted a rally in the seventh when Williams doubled and advanced to third, but the comeback was cut short as Hartford reliever Grace Hopkins recorded the final outs to seal the win.
Hartford's Mayhood (4-4) earned the win, pitching 6 1/3 innings while allowing three runs on six hits and striking out seven. Hopkins picked up her first save of the season. Roger Williams starter Raegen Germano (3-4) took the loss after allowing three runs on one hit while walking seven over 2 1/3 innings.
