Softball: Hawks Shut Down Gordon in Game One

BRISTOL, R.I.  — The Roger Williams University Softball team secured a 6-0 win over Gordon College on Friday afternoon, led by standout performances from pitcher Raegen Germano and shortstop Shannon Starratt.

Germano (3-3) delivered an impressive performance in the circle, pitching five innings of one-hit ball while striking out six and allowing just two walks. Ava Fairbanks closed out the final two innings, adding two strikeouts and allowing one hit to complete the combined shutout.

Starratt powered the Hawks' offense, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs, a walk, and a solo home run in the fifth inning. Third baseman Christina Denovellis contributed with a two-run double in the first, while outfielder Lucy Maurao chipped in with two hits and an RBI. Catcher Ashley Klingberg also played a key role, scoring twice and stealing a base.

Roger Williams wasted no time establishing control, plating four runs in the first inning. Denovellis' two-run double set the tone, followed by Maurao's RBI single and a groundout from Vianna Chamberlin that brought in another run.

The Hawks extended their lead in the second when Starratt drove in Klingberg with a single, making it 5-0. Starratt added her solo shot in the fifth to cap the scoring.

Gordon (5-10, 0-3 CNE) struggled to generate offense, managing only two hits throughout the game. Their best scoring chance came in the first inning when Ami Rivera reached third on a passed ball, but the Fighting Scots were unable to capitalize.

Emily Graham (4-4) took the loss for Gordon, recording just one out in the first inning before being relieved by Kathryn Melendy, who allowed two runs over 5.2 innings.

Roger Williams (8-7, 1-0 CNE) will face Gordon in game tow of their doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
