Baseball: Hawks Bounce Back, Split Series with Nichols with a 5-2 Victory

DUDLEY, MASS. – The Roger Williams baseball team secured in the win in the second game of a double header at Nichols, splitting the series at 1-1. The win brings the Hawks to 8-10 overall and 2-3 in Conference of New England action.
 
Jonathan Quinn would go the distance in the win for the Hawks, securing his second win of the season. In the victory, he allowed seven hits, two runs (one earned) to go along with five strikeouts and three walks. For the Bison, five different pitchers saw the bump, with Andrew Csordos collecting the loss after allowing three earned runs in the seventh inning.
 
The Hawks racked up eight hits in the win, highlighted by Sam Weigel's two hits, three RBIs and a walk. Ty Cali added two hits, a run and a RBI to go along with a stolen base as well. Despite securing the win, the Hawks left nine guys stranded on base, with Nichols leaving five of their own. For the Bison, Ben Jerome collected two hits, with five other Bison hitters scattering singles.
 
Roger Williams wasted no time getting on the board, with Chris Faraca opening the matchup with a single. Owen Hibbard would work a walk, followed by a Sam Weigel single up the middle scoring Faraca.
 
The teams would remain scoreless until the bottom of the 6th, when two singles would allow Ryan Keating to bring home Collin Harty to knot things up at 1-1.  In the top half of the seventh, the Hawks would respond. Braden Ventura would get hit by a pitch to open up the frame, followed by a fielder's choice that would see him get thrown out at second, with Dennis Folan claiming first. The Hawks would then walk, single, and get hit by a pitch which would bring home a run to give them the 2-1 lead.
 
In the bottom half of the seventh, the Bison would come to life all with two outs. Luis Vargas would walk, followed by a throwing error that would allow him to advance to second. Andrew Croteau would capitalize on the Hawks mistake, knocking in the runner to tie it back up at 2-2.
 
The top of the ninth would be where the rest of the action came, as the Hawks would get things started with a leadoff single. A walk, followed by another single would give the Hawks the lead 3-2, but they were not done yet. Following a throwing error and stolen base, Sam Weigel would come up with runners on second and third where he would knock a single through the left side to tack on another two runs to the Hawks lead. They would go on to secure the 5-2 victory and split the double header with Nichols College.
 
In their next matchup, Roger Williams will travel back home to take on Curry College in a Conference of New England matchup. Following Curry, they will travel to Boston to take on Umass Boston on April 3rd.
