Men’s Lacrosse: Wheaton Outlasts Roger Williams in Non-Conference Action

NORTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team dropped their first contest in 11 attempts to the Lyons of Wheaton College at Nordin Field on the campus of Wheaton on Wednesday evening.
 
Wheaton's win was the first over RWU since March 22, 2005, snapping a 10-game winning steak for the Hawks against the Lyons. Out of the past 13 contests, only one has been decided by four or more goals.
 
The Hawks outshot Wehaton 49-35, with Wheaton's goalkeeper Connor Almstrom making 16 saves in cage. The Hawks were succesfull on each of their 21 clear attempts while Wheaton completed 25-of-27 attempts. The Hawks held a slight edge in the ground ball battle, 30-27, while playing to a draw in faceoffs 12-12.
 
The Lyon offense was run through Charlie Racine, who tallied five points, off a pair of goals and three assists, while also collecting three ground balls and a caused turnover. Theo Stamatel had three assists, while Emmett Edwards and Mike McLaughlin had a pair of goals each with Edwards also dishing out a helper. Chris Bodnaruk had eight ground balls while winning 11 faceoffs.
 
For RWU, Ryan Vendetti exploded for four goals in the contest, with 6-of-11 shot attempts landing on target. Eric Brooks also had a pair of goals, while there were six different goal scorers in the matchup for the Hawks. Jack Kester recorded the lone assist for the Hawks, while Kyle Zirn had three caused turnovers with seven ground balls in the game. Aaron D'Aversa picked up the loss in cage for Roger Williams with nine saves on 18 chances.
 
 Evan Paturzo scored the opening goal of the game for the Lyons, as they scored three straight to open up the contest. After a man-up goal by Charlie Goodrich put Wheaton up 3-0, Brooks tallied his first of the game, with a goal 1:40 into the contest, after Kester found him open. Ethan Mahoney and Brooks scoreed the opening goals of the second froe, knotting the score at 3-3. Wheaton tallied two goals in the final five minutes of the opening half, to take a 5-3 lead into the break.
 
Entering the second half, Vendetti scored twice in the opening 1:34 seconds as the Hawks leveled the score again. Wheaton then responded with two goals separated by 47 seconds to retake a two goal advantage. Vendetti then struck for the third time in the frame, cutting the deficit down to one to enter the fourth quarter.
 
Ion the fourth, Wheaton struck first with McLaughlin scoring his seventh of the year, ahead of Brady Lee and Vendetti each tallying a goal to level the score at 8-8, with 8:12 remaining. Late in the fourth, Racine scored with 4:07 on the clock, while Edwards followed with a goal at 3:13. Racine added another goal for the Lyons with 2:25 remaining.  The Hawks did not back down with Malcolm Steegstra scoring with 15 seconds remaining. Off the ensuing faceoffs, David Rizzo won the faceoff and scored, but the Lyons would hold on in the final eight seconds, to seal the victory
 
Roger Williams (2-4, 0-0 CNE) will travel to Nashua, N.H. to take on Rivier on Saturday, Mar. 8 at 1:00 pm.  The Hawks will then take on Kean at the University of Delaware during Spring Break.
