AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team was unable to overcome a five run first inning deficit as they fell 11-4 to the Cardinal of Saint Mary's (Minn.) on Friday evening.
Owen DeGrand lasted 3.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits whiel striking out three. Luke Pilot then took over throwing 2.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts, earning the win. Alex Amin then finished the contest with a perfect seventh inning.
The Hawks saw
Nolan Niziol fall to 0-1 on the young season, while
Evan Beatie pitched 2.0 innings in relief facing seven batters with only one walk allowed.
Riley Bauman had a day where he went 2-for-3 knocking in tow runs with a walk and a stolen base, while Ryan Csida and Josh Costello each had two hits with a pair of RBIs. Daniel Sherman had a double with two runs crossing the plate.
For the Hawks,
Owen Hibbard and
Dennis Folan each had an RBI while recording a hit, with
Chris Faraca going 3-for-5 at the dish.
Will Florio had two RBIs with one hit with the matchup.
In the first inning, Saint Mary's had five runs, with the Hawks cutting into the deficit in the bottom half cutting the lead down to four after Folan brought in a RBI after being hit by a pitch. After the third the Cardinal led 11-1, but three runs tallied in the fourth inning closed the scoring with the Hawks eventually falling.
Roger Williams (1-1, 0-0 CNE) will face off against Allegheny on Saturday, Mar. 8 at 9:30 pm. The Hawks will then play UMass Dartmouth on Sunday, Mar, 9 at 12:15 pm.
